Innovative check in service Vitally being rolled out

Sansome Health, a world-class research organization and leading operator of health systems, today announced the initial roll-out of an ambitious project to cut down wait times and speed up access to patient’s vital signs. The new service, called Vitally, is a self-service kiosk situated directly beside the check-in counter in the hospital’s emergency room.

Designed to be functional and beautiful, while also providing the highest data quality and patient privacy, Vitally streamlines the check-in process by utilizing biosecurity techniques such as fingerprint and retina scanning.  The patient steps into the machine, an all-white freestanding pod, and is immediately scanned, which will check the patient into the hospital, update expected wait times, and access their medical history.  A blood pressure cuff records the blood pressure and a thermometer, with sterile covering, extends to allow the patient to register their temperature.  A full body scan is performed to accurately gather weight and height information.

The cutting-edge project is being led by a longtime leader in bio-mechanics and robotics.   Over four years of research and development has gone into this project.  Intially funded in part by a private grant from a leading non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of healthcare services, Sansome Health continued to invest in the project after intial market testing showed a dramatic decrease of 32% in overall wait times as well as a 12% decrease in data input errors.

Vitally is currently available in Sansome’s flagship hospital located in California and will undergo six months of real-world application and testing.

Sansome Health researching personalized wait times

Sansome Health, a world-class research organization and leading operator of health systems, today announced major advances in emergency room and urgent care wait times, with the roll-out of their new personalized wait times system in 18 of their top health systems around the country.

The amount of time patients with non life-streatening conditions spend in the hospital largely made up of time spent in the waiting room.  On average, wait times before a patient is taken to a room during peak hours is 96 minutes.  This average however, can fluctuate dramatially.  For example, the average wait time for a broken bone is 56 minutes.

Leading researchers in Sansome Health’s BioMed Futures Lab have been developing the technology and complicated algorithms to accurately predict individual wait times.  This required a coordinated effort between the research lab and staff at four of the largest Sansome health systems.  Each estimated wait time takes into consideration such factors as previous wait times for similar medical issues, the number and specialty of physicians and nurses on staff, and existing patients aready in the queue.

When patients check in – either through Sansome’s automated check-in system Vitally or manually through the desk – they are given a bracelet which contains an RFID chip.  Sensors throughout the hospital track the movement of the patient throughout the hospital all the way through to check out.  Additionally, each paperless hospital is linked in real-time, which annonomously updates the central services with details about the type of medical issue, the wait time, additional wait time to see a doctor and ultimately discharge.
